Trigun

Not:

Zen and the Art of motorcycle maintenance

""to tear down a factory or to revolt against a government or to avoid repair of a motorcycle because it is a system is to attack effects rather than causes; and as long as the attack is upon effects only, no change is possible. The true system, the real system, is our present construction of systematic thought itself, rationality itself, and if a factory is torn down but the rationality which produced it is left standing, then that rationality will simply produce another factory. If a revolution destroys a systematic government, but the systematic patterns of thought that produced that government are left intact, then those patterns will simply repeat themselves. There’s so much talk about the system. And so little understanding.”"

Top 10 beaches in Turkey

10 crowd-free beaches, from hidden bays to pristine secluded coves
Kaputas Beach
Golden arc ... Kaputas beach, near Kalkan.
If a summer holiday in Turkey makes you think of crowded beaches and heaving resorts, think again.  Scattered among the mountainous peninsulas lie hidden arcs of sand, pretty shingle bays and unspoilt villages with simple restaurants opening out on to the beach.  Most can only be reached by car or boat, meaning they are rarely busy, even in the height of summer.

1. Ovabuku  **

Ovabuku beach, Turkey
Tucked away on the Datca peninsula, Ovabuku is the prettiest in a chain of three bays, along with Hayitbuku and Kizilbuk. The beach is a relatively small stretch of creamy shingle, backed by a cluster of small restaurants and pensions, while the countryside around has a lush beauty; pine forests mixed with oak, myrtle and carob trees.  It's not the beach itself that makes this such a fantastic find, it's the whole package: peace, authenticity and a real sense of escape.

2. Butterfly Valley  **

Butterfly beach, Turkey
Spectacularly situated between two towering cliffs, Butterfly valley stretches out in a v-shape, ending in a sweep of pristine beach. Most visitors access the beach by boat from Olu Deniz or Fethiye, but for adventurous trekkers there is a rocky path that leads down from the road (around 40 mins down and an hour back up).  There is no electricity, roads or buildings in the valley but camping is allowed and there are shelters in the trees. Alternatively, stay in the peaceful hamlet of Faralya and gaze down to the beach, hundreds of feet below.

3. Amos

Hidden between the resorts of Turunc and Kumlubuk on the Bozburun peninsula, Amos is a small cove tucked between two headlands.  It's a bit rough and ready and the pebbles are scattered with ancient wooden loungers, but there is an unspoilt beauty that makes a stark contrast to the bling and bright lights of Marmaris, which lies across the bay.  Amos was once a sizeable Roman settlement and there are some remains, including a small amphitheatre with breathtaking views.  Better still, there's an excellent restaurant right on the beach, serving up fresh fish and meze.

4. Gemiler

It's hard to believe that Gemiler lies just a short way away from the heavily overpopulated Olu Deniz beach; it's rarely crowded and reached by boat or bus ride from Hisaronu, through the fertile Kaya valley, past tobacco and wheat fields and out to the very tip of the Fethiye peninsula. Surrounded by pine and olive trees, the beach looks across to St Nicholas Island, and there are a couple of good restaurants serving up fresh meze and cold Efes beers.

5. Cirali

Cirali Beach, Turkey
Olympos beach, famed for its treehouse accommodation, has been on the backpacker trail for years, but neighbouring Cirali has managed to avoid the same level of development.  The 3km sweep of beach is a protected area, thanks to the loggerhead turtles who clamber out of the sea to nest on the sand.  Flanked by two huge mountains, the whole area around Cirali is dramatically beautiful, while the village behind offers simple restaurants and pensions, with a pleasingly hippyish atmosphere.

6. Kaputas  **

Kaputas Beach, Turkey
On the breathtaking road between Kalkan and Kas, the beach at Kaputas is formed by a gorge that opens out into a stretch of sand.  The long flight of steps down from the road means there are no facilities on the beach, so take water and a parasol if you're planning to stay a while.  It's a popular beach with locals, which gives it a very different feel to many of Turkey's more accessible stretches of coastline.  Dolmuses (minibuses) between Kalkan and Kas stop off at Patara, and if you go on a windy day there are fabulous waves.

7. Hisaronu Bay

 Hisaronu beach, Turkey
Not to be confused with the neon-lit nightmare resort above Olu Deniz, Hisaronu Bay has two small beaches that look out towards the Datca peninsula.  Behind the beach lies the kind of resort that feels like Turkey 20 years ago; a clutch of restaurants and simple pensions dotted along quiet country lanes.  The beaches are popular with windsurfers as there's a permanent breeze and if you fancy a change of scene, the equally unspoilt beaches at Selimiye and Orhaniye are a short dolmus-ride away.

8. Ortakent

Ortakent beach, Turkey
Lying mid-way along the Bodrum peninsula, Ortakent is not exactly a secret, but its delightful beach, backed by market gardens and the agreeable quiet bustle of a rural village.  Ortakent is a great option for a family holiday with older kids in tow, as the beach offers a range of watersports, from wake-boarding to kayaking and sailing.  The Bodrum peninsula is scattered with picturesque coves and bays and a self-hire boat is the ideal way to find your very own hidden beach.

9. Gunluklu

Avoid Gunluklu on the weekends, as locals flock to this stretch of beach, to camp and watch the sunset over campfires and barbecues. On weekdays, however, it remains peaceful – hidden down a long track from the Fethiye-Gocek road, surrounded by pine forests and sweet gum trees.  Gunluklu is an ideal option if you want a feeling of total escape, with the option of a bit of a bustle if you feel like a night out or shopping spree – Fethiye is just a short drive away.

10. Kabak  **

If you're staying in Faralya but the trek down (or boat trip across) to the beach at Butterfly Valley seems a little like hard work, head instead for Kabak – a totally unspoilt stretch of shingle beach that is surrounded on three sides by lush pine forest.  There is nothing on the beach, and only a few secluded campsites behind it; if you're looking for a back-to-basics beach experience this is the perfect spot.  Visit at night and the lights of Olu Deniz twinkle across the bay; 15 minutes' drive and a whole world away.

10 of the best Greek islands for travel snobs

Mykonos, best Greek islands on GlobalGrasshopper.com
 – The Greek islands are undoubtedly some of the most beautiful islands in Europe. More than 5000 individual islands surround the mainland coast of Greece, stretching across the Aegean, Ionian and Mediterranean Sea. Known for their rocky coastline, superb beaches and plenty of sunshine, they make an ideal holiday destination – which is why some of the larger Greek islands have unfortunately succumbed to rapid development. So if you want to avoid to the worst of the crowds and find your own slice of Greek heaven, here is my list of 10 of the best Greek islands for travel snobs 2012:-

1. Aegina

Aegina, best Greek islands on GlobalGrasshopper.com
This is a very interesting island, offering both history and beautiful unspoilt scenery. Aegina has so far managed to escape the mass tourism which has affected so many of the other Greek islands which means you can expect plenty of peace and quiet. Although, there is still plenty to do here – choose from sunbathing at one of the beaches or exploring the isolated monasteries or churches. If you’re planning a trip make sure you include a visit to the Temple of Aphaea (know locally as Afea). Steeped in ancient Greek legend, the temple was built as a shrine to an ill-fated Cretan woman. When the evening falls and the hunger pangs set in, head along the west coast to Perdhika. Here you’ll find plenty of traditional taverns offering an excellent range of freshly caught fish.

2. Gavdos

Gavdos can definitely be considered one of the best Greek Islands. It’s the southernmost island in Europe and still remains untouched with many visitors saying it’s like going back in time. Not much is known about the island although Gavdos was named in James Aldridge’s 1944 novel The Sea Eagle.’ The two main beaches are Agios Ioannis and Potamos, both of which are very relaxing and peaceful. They are arguably the most attractive beaches in the Greek islands, if not Europe. There’s not much in the way of tourist facilities/accommodation on the island so an easier option might be to stay in the nearby island of Crete and get a boat ride across.

3. Icaria

Icaria, best Greek islands on GlobalGrasshopper.com
Icaria (also known as Ikaria) is one of the most beautiful Greek islands. The island is located in the Aegean Sea, 19km from Samos. It has taken its name from Icarus, the son of Daedalus in Greek mythology, who is believed to have fallen into the nearby sea. It’s a very mountainous island and at some points fairly inaccessible but its blessed with green valleys, ancient ruins, wild falcons and some amazing beaches. I’ve included Icaria, not only because of how it took its name but also because it will give you an authentic taste of old world Greece, away from the crowds and the noisy karaoke bars.

4. Tilos

The remote and small tranquil island of Tilos can be found in the Aegean Sea nestled between Kos and Rhodes. It takes its name from Telos (the son of Helios and Halia) who is believed to have visited the island looking for herbs to make his sick mother better. The island is mountainous with an abundance of flora and fauna making it an ideal travel destination for walkers and anyone who appreciates nature in general. The island’s wildlife is also fairly unusual and Tilos is home to many beautiful Mediterranean birds and a unique population of pygmy elephants.

5. Santorini

Santorini -a favourite of honeymooners – is known for being romantic and photogenic. Although Santorini is often considered a luxury resort it also attracts many independent travellers who stay in cheaper guest houses or hostels. Visiting Fira is a must, it’s a small town which sits on the top of the rim looking west and has a drop of approximately 250m – a jump that would be too excessive for even the biggest adrenalin junkie. The majority of shops selling postcards around Greece will have photographs from Santorini and once you come here you will realize why.

6. Zakynthos

Zakynthos is an island where you’ll find hundreds of photograph opportunities. Blessed with wonderful and diverse scenery, you’ll find yourself trigger-happy with your camera. On the island there is a famous stretch of sand known as “Shipwreck Beach.” This is where a stranded ship – whose last voyage was back in 1983 – rests. Again it’s an unspoilt Greek island destination where you can choose from a vast array of activities if it takes your fancy. Try boating, mountain trekking, surfing or just swim amongst sea turtles from one of the white sandy beaches. If you’re feeling a little more adventurous then try snorkelling or scuba diving between rocks and underwater caves.

7. Mykonos

I wanted to include a more faster pace island destination for those who want a mixture of beauty and hedonism. Although Mykonos is a popular party island there is still plenty of naturally beautiful scenery on offer. Mykonos has a collection of unique Cycladic architecture set around a picturesque fishing-village bay. The square whitewashed buildings sit closely together forming a maze of narrow alley ways and streets and are highly photogenic. Every type of visitor is catered for here, from the luxury seeking holiday makers to the independent backpacker. The more lively travellers should head to Paradise Beach where you’ll find lots of places to party all night. If you decide to take a break from all the madness, then find a peaceful spot to view the beautiful Caprice sunset.

8. Skopelos

Skopelos, best Greek islands on GlobalGrasshopper.com
For those who prefer a quieter island, definitely consider the comparatively untouched Skopelos. Skopelos is virtually all forest, with 80% of the island cloaked in pine trees but dotted with several sleepy resorts scattered around the indented shoreline. The locals are incredibly friendly, they may even invite you into their homes where you can stay for a fair price and enjoy local delicacies. Just a short bus ride from the main town, Panormos and Milia are two excellent but quiet beaches which will allow you to spend hours taking in the sun without being disturbed.

9. Kefalonia

Although it’s one of the more popular holiday islands, Kefalonia attracts mostly respectful holiday-makers. Made famous by the popular novel and film, Captain Corelli’s Mandolin the island has natural beauty in abundance. You’ll find pretty traditional villages and beaches with turquoise sea, bleached sand and communities of endangered loggerhead turtles. The island is also home to arguably one of the best beaches in Greece. As you head to the northwest corner you will discover Myrtos Beach. It may not be the prettiest but it’s very peaceful and surrounded by incredible green mountains – an experience not to be missed.

10. Milos

My final choice is Milos, which can be found in the Aegean Sea, just north of the Sea of Crete. The famous statue of Aphrodite (the “Venus de Milo” which is now housed in the Louvre) was discovered amongst ancient ruins here. Milos has an incredible 70 beaches to choose from, with Hivadolimni being the longest at 1 kilometre. Despite being well known, Milos is still classed as a low-profile location. Adamas is the main town and the area is home to many hidden beaches, all within walking distance. The island’s other highlights include surreal rock formations and caves that just have to be explored – especially the Papafragas Cave. You also might want to consider taking a sea-taxi tour – this will allow you to visit the more remote spots which are only accessible by water.
